Emma Raducanu: British No 1 retires due to illness from first round of Qatar Open

Emma Raducanu retired due to illness from her first-round match at the Qatar Open against world No 80 Camilla Osorio.

The British No 1 suffered a disappointing defeat against Sorana Cristea in the Transylvania Open final, missing the chance to claim her first tournament win since the 2021 US Open, and there was further disappointment after retiring in the third set against Osorio.

After looking comfortable during an impressive 6-2 first-set win lasting just 37 minutes, Raducanu came under pressure against the resurgent Colombian Osorio, who broke early on in the second set and never looked back to win 6-4 and force a decider.

The Brit then took a long bathroom break in between sets, and looked fatigued straight away after her return as Osorio broke in first game of the third set, leading Raducanu to ask for the physio.

After a straightforward hold for Osorio, a crestfallen Raducanu walked to the net and conceded to end her Qatar Open campaign at the first hurdle.

The world No 25 returned to action just two days after her final appearance in Romania, and questions over her physical condition surrounded her appearance in Qatar.

With Raducanu not listed as playing in the WTA Dubai Championships, the next event taking place in the Middle East in six days, it remains to be seen where she will play next.
