Former Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger returns to NHL as head coach of Buffalo Sabres

Former Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger has been appointed head coach of NHL team Buffalo Sabres.

Krueger left the Saints in April after over five years at St Mary's during which time the club achieved four top-eight finishes in the Premier League and reached an EFL Cup final.

He began his coaching career in the Austrian Hockey League, before spending 12 years in charge of the Swiss national team. He is a former head coach of the Edmonton Oilers and spent five years as a European consultant for the Carolina Hurricanes.

"I am excited and honoured to join the Buffalo Sabres family and will strive to maximise the potential that lies within this team," Krueger said.

"I look forward to building on the many positives that have been established within the organisation and I am especially eager to get behind the bench and represent this passionate hockey city."

Krueger won a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as a consultant to the Canadian coaching staff.

"Throughout his career, Ralph has shown the ability to adapt to a variety of high-pressure environments while leading some of the world's elite players," Sabres general manager Jason Botterill said.

"His strong communication skills, leadership and diverse background make him a uniquely qualified candidate to lead our team going forward."
